If you’ve found yourself with any of the following error messages when using Outlook 2016 and trying to open attachment this blog may help correct the problem.

“Word experienced an error trying to open the file”
“The file is corrupt and cannot be opened” error on Office 2016 Excel while opening .xls files/attachments.
We strongly encourage that you confirm your antivirus is up to date before making these changes. Far too many viruses disguise themselves as legitimate emails.
Within Microsoft Word:
Click File -> Options
This will open the Word Options window
Click on Trust Center ->and then click on the Trust Center Settings.. button
This will bring up the Trust Center window
Click Protected View (if it’s not already selected)
Uncheck the following box -> Enable Protected View for Outlook attachments
Click on OK to save these settings in the Trust Center window
Click on OK in the Word Options to commit these changes.
Close Microsoft Word and re-attempt to open an email with a Word document attachment.
The process also needs to be repeated in Microsoft Excel 2016.
