Following a Microsoft 365 security incident, J-Crew wanted confidence that its Microsoft 365 environment was secure and could support the business into the future. Rather than applying a short-term remediation, Cymax worked with the client to build a new Microsoft 365 environment designed around recognised security controls, governance and long-term resilience. Within approximately one week, the business was operating from its new environment, with further governance improvements completed over the following six weeks to support its SMB1001:2026 Gold uplift—strengthening governance, improving cyber resilience and restoring confidence in its technology platform.
A Microsoft 365 breach is rarely just an IT issue.
For J-Crew, the incident created immediate concerns around business continuity, customer trust and cash flow. There was uncertainty about which accounts had been compromised, which customers may have been affected, and whether the existing Microsoft 365 environment could ever be fully trusted again.
The immediate cyber incident had already been addressed by an incident response provider.
However, the existing Microsoft 365 environment still limited the ability to fully implement Microsoft’s recommended security controls and left uncertainty about residual access and the long-term integrity of the environment.
The challenge wasn’t simply recovering from the breach. It was restoring confidence that it
couldn’t happen again.
Cymax was engaged following the initial incident response to provide a permanent solution.
Rather than focusing on a short-term fix, two options were presented:
J-Crew chose the clean rebuild, prioritising long-term security and confidence over short-term convenience.
Cymax then designed and implemented a new Microsoft 365 environment built around recognised security controls, governance and ongoing management.
The technology implementation delivered much more than a secure Microsoft 365 environment.
Importantly, shortly after implementation, another suspicious email was received by the business.
Cymax identified the threat quickly and responded immediately, reinforcing the value of the new security controls and giving the client confidence that the environment was now actively
protected.
Many organisations assume their Microsoft 365 environment is secure because it is operational.
As cyber threats continue to evolve, organisations are increasingly expected to demonstrate not just technical capability, but sound governance and documented security practices.
If you’re unsure whether your Microsoft 365 environment provides the level of protection your business requires, the best time to review it is before an incident occurs.
